AHMEDABAD: Santosh Tomar, a youth working for an eatery in the city, was caught by Ahmedabad police for supplying the weapon used in the firing on industrialist Chintan Shah on September 27. So far, five persons have been arrested in the case.
On September 27, Shah, a resident of Usmanpura, was shot in the stomach outside his residence by a youth. Police investigation revealed the involvement of Chintan's relative, Dharmesh Shah, 34, who was arrested last week.
On the basis of Dharmesh's confessional statement, police later arrested Lila Sutreja alias Lalji Mer, 35, a history-sheeter from Manavadar, along with Vijay and Raju Parmar. The accused confessed that Rs 48 lakh had been paid as part of a Rs 1.25 crore 'supari' for Chintan's murder.
"Raju Parmar had named Tomar, 28, a native of Rajasthan, as the supplier of the country-made gun. Parmar, who is now a Sanskrit teacher, used to work for the same establishment for which Tomar worked and he had met Tomar three years back. Tomar used to boast of criminal connections. Hence, Parmar contacted him for providing a weapon to kill Chintan Shah," said a Naranpura police official.
Naranpura police inspector H K Rana told TOI that Tomar had got Rs 60,000 commission for the job. "Tomar had used his connections in Madhya Pradesh to source the country-made gun for which Mer and party had paid him Rs 1.25 lakh. We are hopeful of getting further information about the weapon exchange after Tomar's questioning," said Rana.
Meanwhile, police have started a search for Ishani who had worked as a mediator between Dharmesh Shah and Lalji.
