Dhaka-Delhi foreign secretary talks in December; Sheikh Hasina's extradition on the table?
DHAKA: Bangladesh and India are preparing for a foreign secretary-level meeting in Dhaka during which the potential extradition of ex-PM Sheikh Hasina, at present in India, could be discussed. The meeting is scheduled in early Dec.
Bangladesh foreign affairs ministry public diplomacy wing director-general Toufique Hasan said Thursday an inter-ministerial meeting was held at the ministry to prepare for the upcoming discussions.
The foreign office consultations will be led by Bangladesh foreign secretary Md Jashim Uddin and his Indian counterpart Vikram Misri. The meeting is expected to cover a range of bilateral issues and Hasan said "there is scope for discussion on the matter (extradition of Hasina)".
Hasina, who fled Dhaka on Aug 5 and has been in India since, is facing trial in Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal for her alleged involvement in mass killings during the July-Aug uprising.
While Bangladesh's interim govt seeks her return, Hasan clarified that the foreign affairs ministry hasn't yet received any formal directive to begin the extradition process. "We will engage with Delhi and initiate the formal process in accordance with the existing extradition treaty once we receive the necessary instructions," he said.
