Microsoft Paint and Photos gets Google's Magic Editor-like features: All details
Microsoft has started rolling out the 2024 update for its Windows 11 operating system. The latest update will add new AI features to the Paint and Photos apps on Copilot Plus PCs. With these features, Copilot Plus PC users will have access to tools like Generative Fill and Generative Erase. These tools will allow users to precisely add or remove elements within images using a size-adjustable brush.
These additions build upon the existing Cocreator tool, which generates images from text prompts and sketches. Microsoft has also claimed that it has improved the underlying AI model for better quality as well as speed and will incorporate safeguards to prevent misuse.
The Generative Erase tool will be able to eliminate unwanted objects and distractions, similar to Google Pixel's Magic Eraser, while Generative Fill will enable users to insert AI-generated assets based on text descriptions. Meanwhile, the Microsoft Photos app will now support the Super Resolution feature that is designed to enhance lower-resolution and older photos into high-quality images. Here are all the details

Microsoft Paint and Photos new AI tools: How they will work

In a blog post, Microsoft explained how the Generative Erase and Generative Fill feature will work on Copilot Plus PCs. The company wrote: “With the addition of generative fill and generative erase, you can edit and alter images with greater precision and creative freedom. Using an adjustable brush, you can remove unwanted or distracting elements in your image or add new ones, exactly where you want them. We’ve also improved the underlying diffusion-based model to deliver better results faster, and with built-in moderation, it’s a creative experience you can trust.”
The company also described how the Super-resolution feature in the Photos app will work. Microsoft noted: “Reimagine and enhance your lower-resolution and older photos into high-quality images without worrying they’ll look blurry or pixelated. You no longer have to deal with a distorted, pixelated photo after increasing its size. Using powerful on-device AI, super-resolution in Photos will transform your old or lower-quality images into reimagined memories. Simply use the slider to increase the resolution by up to 8X, and precisely control and adjust the output. And this work won’t take all night. With the power of the 40+ TOPS NPU, super-resolution in photos can upscale a photo up to 4K within seconds, for free.”
