Pittsburgh Pirates’ fans will see some new changes made to the roster, as a new player has been added to the team. Outfielder Alexander Canario will be featured in the 26-man Major League roster. To fit in Canario, the Pirates transferred Ji Hwan Bae, who plays both infield and outfield, to their minor league team, Triple-A Indianapolis.
Who is Pirates’ new outfielder Alexander Canario?
The Pittsburgh Pirates onboarded Alexander Canario from the New York Mets, in exchange for money, who will now be playing for Major League Baseball. These moves are part of the Pirates’ plan to improve their team’s “depth and flexibility.” The Pirates have also traded catcher Jason Delay to another team for cash.
Originally from Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic, Alexander Canario began his professional baseball career in 2016, when he signed with the San Francisco Giants as an international free agent. In 2017, Canario played with the Giants in the Dominican Summer League. Later, in 2019, he played for the Low-A Salem-Keizer Volcanoes.
In the 2019 fall, Canario played for the Arizona League Giants. With a gap in 2020, Canario returned with the San Jose Giants to Single-A in 2021. In 2021, the Chicago Cubs traded Canario. He played for the Iowa Cubs at the start of 2023 and eventually made it to the Cubs at the end of the season.
The Cubs designated Canario for assignment in 2025, and then traded him to the New York Mets for cash considerations in February. The Pirates brought Canario on board in March.
How are the Pittsburgh Pirates planning to handle the change?
These new changes within the roster of Pittsburgh Pirates suggests that the team is trying to balance out experienced players with younger players.
Alexander Canario is expected to strengthen the out fielding, which can be expected to look better, considering the baseball season is getting tougher. While moving Ji Hwan Bae implies that the team plans to help young players to develop and improve.
