As the Opening Day looms in, various teams are trying to strengthen their tactics and team members. However, Baltimore Orioles brought in their old pitcher, Kyle Gibson, to the frontline by signing a one-year contract.
Though it is a one-year deal, will Kyle Gibson remain with Orioles or switch teams in the next season? What does Gibson’s entry in team mean?
Breaking down Kyle Gibson’s contract
Kyle Gibson signed a one-year contract with the Baltimore Orioles last Friday. The deal amounted to $5.25 Million excluding performance bonus of $1.525 Million. The right-handed pitcher would get $150,000 for every 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, and 24 starts, along with $125,000 each for every 110, 120, 130, 140, and 150 innings.
Back in 2023, Orioles had signed Gibson for a year by offering a deal of $10 Million. He proved to be a valuable player back then, leading the team’s rotation with a 4.73 ERA in 33 outings, that lead Orioles into winning the American League East title.
In 2024, Gibson was locked in by St. Louis Cardinals through a one-year contract amounting to $12 Million. However, the Cardinals opted out of the same deal for 2025 that also included a $1 Million buyout option.
Brandon Hyde on having Kyle Gibson back in the team
Upon asking the Orioles’ manager, Brandon Hyde, regarding the decision of bringing Kyle Gibson back home, he stated,
“Kyle was amazing for us a couple of years ago — what he did in the clubhouse, but also how he took the ball every five days and kept us in almost every game. He’s an unbelievable leader, had a good year last year in St. Louis, and I’m really happy about adding him back.”
However, chances of seeing Gibson at the season’s start are slim, as the pitcher has spent majority of his Spring training time as a free agent.
Though adding Gibson to the Orioles rotation was important, as some key players are going to start the season on the injured list, Hyde stated that Gibson needs to be ready before going out in the field.
“He’s not going to be ready for a long time. As you saw last year, it takes a lot of starters. We used a lot of starters last year. So just adding another rotation piece, we felt like, is important.”
However, fans can still expect to see Gibson back in action with Baltimore Orioles this year.
