All eyes are not just on the biggest F1 stars but also on the young rookies who could surprise on the track. Among them is Alpine driver Jack Doohan, who is making his foray as a full-time F1 driver at just 22. He is participating in the season opener, the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, with the advantage of racing in his home country. Here’s all about the promising racer.

Who is Jack Doohan?

Jack is, however, not new to the world of motorsport, as he is the son of former Grand Prix motorcycle road racing World Champion Mick Doohan. Jack has the biggest motivator at home, with his father having won five consecutive 500cc World Championships.

Jack Doohan’s early achievements

Racing is all Doohan has done in his life so far, and he has reached Formula 1 by climbing the ladder step by step. Doohan began professional kart racing at the age of nine when F1 star Michael Schumacher gifted him a go-kart, and the young driver started winning one trophy after another. He won the Australian Karting Championship in 2015 and 2016 and then entered junior formulae in 2018. He competed in various championships and achieved significant success in Formula 4, then FIA Formula 3, and later FIA Formula 2.
Finally making his way to Formula 1, Doohan joined the Red Bull Junior team. He then joined the Alpine Academy in 2022 and was their reserve driver in 2023 and 2024. He made his F1 debut when Alpine picked him up as a replacement for Esteban Ocon at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after Ocon moved to Haas. This season, he is competing as a full-time driver alongside Pierre Gasly.

On the first day of the Australian Grand Prix, March 14, Doohan shared a few glimpses of himself and his car on Instagram. He wrote, “First Friday of 2025 in the books! Great to finally be back on track. Let’s see what Saturday brings.”

Currently, Doohan is among the rookies with the lowest salary as an F1 driver. He will take home $500,000 for his debut year in F1. But considering his track record since childhood, it may not take long for him to reach the top.
