Tamil Nadu weather alert: State braces for more rain as weather department issues warning
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a heavy rainfall warning for southern Tamil Nadu, with an orange alert in place as showers continue to drench multiple districts. The downpour is attributed to a low-pressure trough over the southwest Bay of Bengal, near the Tamil Nadu coast, extending up to 1.5 km above sea level. The weather department has cautioned that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in several districts, with travel and daily life expected to be affected in the coming days.
The districts of Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Tenkasi are set to experience very heavy rainfall, while other regions, including the delta areas, have already seen significant showers. Travellers are advised to put their travel plans on hold for now, at least till the weather condition improves, and it is safe to be out again.
Tiruvarur town recorded the highest rainfall, measuring 78.5 mm by evening, while Kodavasal received 59 mm. In Mayiladuthurai district, steady showers continued throughout the day, with Mayiladuthurai town recording 23 mm, Manalmedu 30 mm, and Sembanarkoil 25 mm. Tiruchirappalli saw an average rainfall of 17.49 mm by 4 p.m., later decreasing to 15.18 mm by 8 p.m. Thanjavur district received 17.45 mm of rain, though no significant damages were reported.
Despite the intense showers, no major destruction has been recorded. However, waterlogging in some areas has caused minor disruptions to traffic and daily activities.

Tamil Nadu travel and safety advisory

With the possibility of cyclonic storms, the RMC has advised fishermen against venturing into the sea. The rough weather conditions could pose risks to boats and small vessels. Those residing in the coastal areas are advised to exercise caution.
Travelers heading to southern Tamil Nadu should prepare for road disruptions, potential delays in transportation, and waterlogging in low-lying regions. Those planning to visit tourist spots, particularly in the affected districts, should monitor weather updates and consider rescheduling travel plans if necessary. Coastal travelers are advised to stay away from the shore, as high tides and strong winds could make conditions hazardous.

In Chennai and surrounding areas, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy, with light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in some parts of the city. Across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, cloudy conditions will persist, with intermittent rain showers likely.
Authorities have urged residents in flood-prone areas to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions. People should avoid unnecessary travel, especially in regions that are expected to experience very heavy rainfall. With the orange alert still in effect, residents are encouraged to stay updated through official weather advisories.
