Being Single: “Society sees me as a single man but I am dating a boy”
Vikram Singh, 38, an IT security specialist, has been ‘officially’ single forever, because in India, being gay is still unacceptable! We asked him how that arrangement has been for him and how he has handled it all and here is what he shared with us.

1. Does it annoy you when people ask why you are single?

Not anymore. I am just waiting for the moment when I can say I have a boyfriend without fearing my parents’ rejection and the ridicule of my “straight” family and neighbours and even colleagues.

2. Why do you think singlehood is questioned so much?

Being Single is no piece of cake and this stands true in every country. You will be judged left, right and center. People just cannot accept someone being happy because today someone else’s validation has become prime. That insecurity is so strong that living on your own bothers others. Also, people can’t see someone else with a smile on their face while they themselves are suffering.

3. What are some of the weirdest, funniest questions you have been asked about being single?

I find nothing weird anymore. People ask you about kids, me being gay and that is something I have not yet revealed to the world. I act like a straight single man not looking for love.

4. Did past relationship experiences play a role in your choosing singlehood? What made you realise or decide that you no longer want a partner?

I was in a relationship with an older gay man and he was a gentleman. He even proposed marriage and said we could even shift to a country where same-sex marriage is acceptable but he died in a car accident. We were together for 3 years and I was so confident. When he died, I was miserable. I gave my parents a hypothetical situation indicating the possibility of me being gay but they went ballistic. That reaction was heartbreaking. It has been 8 years now, and I am fine posing myself as a straight man until the day of open acceptance comes. I am positive it will or I will get a job in a country where it is eventually. Patience is my key to happiness at the moment.

5. Any piece of advice for women and men out there who are contemplating singlehood…

Do whatever you like. Be careful because security is important too. Only confidence can walk you through the life of a single soul.
