NTA announces change in JEE Main exam pattern for 2025

NEW DELHI: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced a change in the pattern of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) for 2025. In a decision made on Thursday, the NTA declared that the optional question format in Section B, which was implemented as a relief measure during the COVID-19 pandemic, will be discontinued.

Previously, students were given the option to attempt any 5 out of 10 numerical questions in Section B of each subject. This flexible format, introduced in 2021 to accommodate the challenges posed by the pandemic, was in effect until the 2024 exams. However, starting from JEE Main 2025, Section B will contain only 5 numerical questions per subject, all of which must be answered. This marks a return to the pre-2021 format.

The NTA also announced that the application process for the first phase of JEE Main 2025 will commence soon, with details to be published on the NTA’s official website. Further information regarding the examination pattern will be provided once the registration process begins.

JEE Main, the national-level entrance exam for engineering courses, consists of three sections: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The exam, which is three hours long, includes a total of 90 questions—30 from each section. Section A contains 20 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) per subject, while Section B consists of 10 numerical questions. Under the revised pattern, all five questions in Section B will be mandatory.

Each correct answer in JEE Main is worth 4 marks, while an incorrect answer results in a deduction of 1 mark. The total score for the exam remains 300 marks.
