Justice AS Oka last week delivered a powerful warning on the rise of hate speech in India, urging young legal minds to protect free speech without allowing it to become a shield for hate and division

Speaking virtually at an event hosted by Columbia Law School in New York last week, Supreme Court judge Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka issued a stark warning: the surge in hate speech in India is undermining the nation’s constitutional values and threatening its social cohesion.
Addressing a full house of law students and scholars, Justice Oka stressed that while India upholds free speech, it cannot be wielded as a weapon to incite hatred or strip others of their dignity.
