Mark Carney, the former central banker, with an approx net worth of $6.97 million, is set to become Canada’s next Prime Minister after winning the Liberal Party leadership race in a landslide. With an inclination towards economics and some impressive academic qualifications, Carey may leave an impression of being a complete geek. However, far from it, he was a star player while playing ice hockey and served as a backup goalie for Harvard.
While much has been said about his impressive career in finance and policy making, less is known about his personal life—his wife, Diana Fox, and their four daughters.
Let us take a look at the personal life of Mark Carney.
From Central Banker to Prime Minister
Carney, 59, was born on March 16, 1965, in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. A Harvard graduate with a doctorate in economics from Oxford, he spent 13 years working for Goldman Sachs in London, Tokyo, New York, and Toronto before stepping into public service.
Mark Carney has served as the Governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013, maneuvering the country through the 2008 financial crisis. In 2013, he established a milestone as the first non-British Governor of the Bank of England, a position he held until 2020. That year, he became the United Nations’ special envoy for climate action and finance. Despite his deep expertise in economics, Carney has never held elected office—making his rise to Prime Minister a remarkable political development.
Diana Fox, wife of Mark Carney
Carney is married to Diana Fox, a British economist. The couple is rumoured to have met while studying at Oxford and tied the knot in 1994. Throughout his career, Diana has remained a steadfast partner, balancing her own professional pursuits with their growing family.

The couple initially lived in Toronto before settling in Ottawa’s Rockcliffe Park neighborhood. When Carney took over the Bank of England, they relocated to London in 2013. After his tenure ended in 2020, the family returned to Ottawa, where Carney focused on political and environmental initiatives.
Who are Mark Carney's daughters?
Carney and Diana Fox have four daughters- Sophia, Amelia, and Tess- but they have largely kept their family life private. However, their eldest daughter, Cleo, has had a successful career, that has caught the media's attention. As per media reports, currently a student at Harvard University, Cleo is actively involved in environmental advocacy. She writes for Bluedot Living, a climate-focused publication, and even hosted a cooking and climate conversation series in 2023, which featured her father in one episode.

Cleo also serves as a board member of the Bluedot Institute and has worked on youth environmental education projects. Further, she has also taken a keen interest in the strategic mining industry, an area she explored during her time at TechMet LTD, a company focused on sourcing critical minerals for the energy transition.
Carney’s other three daughters have remained out of the public spotlight. In 2018, the BBC reported that one was completing her A-levels while another was finishing her GCSEs. More recently, in 2024, Carney shared a proud moment celebrating one of his daughters’ graduation from the University of Edinburgh. Despite this demanding career, Carney has always stressed upon the importance of family. As he steps into his new role as Canada’s Prime Minister, his wife and daughters are sure to be a strong support system in this next chapter of his life.
