The prevalent digital age leads to the spread of rumours and fake news like wildfire on social media platforms, which also causes significant harm to individuals and communities. The quick communication of false information can damage reputations, and even incite violence.
Social media's vast reach that is just a click away and the ease with which content can be shared makes it a breeding ground for misinformation. The recent scandal involving Pakistani TikToker Imsha Rehman is an example of the impact that fake news can have on a person's life.
Who is Imsha Rehman?
Imsha Rehman is a popular Pakistani social media influencer born on October 7, 2002, in Lahore. She has a large following on Instagram and TikTok. She started her online content journey by posting fishing and lifestyle content but then started doing videos that everyone could relate to on TikTok.
As of the last update, she had over 1,11,000 followers on Instagram and nearly 2,00,000 on TikTok. In November, Rehman was involved in a major controversy when explicit videos, which she claims are fake, were leaked online. She then de-activated her accounts and said, "The backlash has been overwhelming." Reports suggest hackers accessed her accounts to release the videos.
Rehman recently broke her silence after a fake video scandal forced her to disappear from social media in November. In an interview with Nukta Pakistan, she spoke about the deep impact the scandal had on her life and said that Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had arrested one person in connection with the fake video scandal.
" I am getting a lot of death threats"
On January 30, Imsha Rehman appeared publicly after the scandal in the first case. Imsha Rehman was dressed in a black mask and hood to conceal her appearance as she detailed her ordeal through an interview to Nukta Pakistan. "I saw the video. It was like my life is over," said Rehman. "I can't go to university. I can't face people. I am getting a lot of death threats," she added.

Rehman criticized those who created the fake videos, "There are some on social media who think it's cool to create videos of people and post them online. But they don't think of how it will affect the lives of people," she said. She explained that she took the legal way of handling the situation rather than explaining it to everyone through her social media accounts, "When these videos went viral, I could have put out a clarification on my account. But I wanted to take the legal route to see who was behind the incident," she added.
Rehman appreciated the efforts of Pakistan's FIA for dealing with the scandal, as he revealed that one person was arrested over the fake videos. Hum English said the FIA as arresting a man named Abdul Aziz from Gujranwala for creating doctored videos of Rehman. Aziz reportedly claimed in interrogation that he had only created a meme. The police did not release any further details.
