Filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj has opened up about his involvement in the story development of Game Changer, starring Ram Charan and Kiara Advani. Despite high expectations, the political action film struggled at the box office, marking director Shankar's second major commercial failure after 'Indian 2'.

In a recent conversation with Galatta Plus, Karthik reflected on how his original idea for the film underwent several changes during production. “I gave an outline of the story — a one-liner. What I had shared was about a very grounded IAS officer who becomes a politician. When I gave the story to Shankar sir, I was so excited to see how he would make it bigger. So that was the world introduced by me. However, it eventually turned into a whole different world,” he shared.
Karthik also suggested that the screenplay saw significant modifications due to the involvement of multiple writers. “There were a lot of people, a lot of writers involved. The screenplay has been changed a lot. The story has also changed a little bit. But you can never define a phenomenon that will work for films. No one can say why this film didn’t connect with the audience,” he added.
Karthik had earlier publicly expressed his appreciation for being part of the project, writing on X (formerly Twitter): “Game Changer was super entertaining with vintage Shankar sir’s grand mass action vibes and political punches. Thank you, Shankar sir, for letting me be a little part of your big vision.”

Directed by S Shankar, the film starred Ram Charan and Kiara Advani in leading roles, with Anjali, SJ Suryah, Srikanth, Sunil, Jayaram, and Samuthirakani in key roles. Reviews from both critics and viewers were mixed, and the film failed to live up to the hype surrounding its release.
Meanwhile, Karthik Subbaraj is gearing up for the release of 'Retro', starring Suriya and Pooja Hegde. It is set to hit cinemas on May 1.
