Suriya's much-awaited film 'Retro', directed by
Karthik Subbaraj and featuring
Pooja Hegde as the female lead, has opened to a strong response at the box office.

According to trade analyst Sacnilk, the film earned an impressive Rs 19.25 crore net on its first day, with
Tamil Nadu contributing the lion’s share of Rs 17.25 crore. The Telugu version added Rs 1.95 crore, while the Hindi version contributed a smaller share. On its second day, early estimates suggest 'Retro' collected around Rs 7.50 crore, bringing the two-day total to approximately Rs 26.75 crore.
Theatre Occupancy
On Friday, May 2, the film recorded an overall Tamil occupancy of 40.23%. Morning shows attracted about 24% of the audience, which increased to over 42% during afternoon and evening screenings, and peaked at 53% for night shows.

In the Telugu market, 'Retro' saw a more modest occupancy of 15.78% on the same day. Morning shows had around 13% occupancy, with afternoon and evening shows drawing between 15% to 18%, and night shows slightly higher at nearly 17%. The Telugu turnout is lower compared to Tamil.
About the Film
'Retro' tells the story of Paarivel Kannan, aka Paari, played by Suriya, a former gangster raised by a powerful don, Thilakan, portrayed by Joju George. Paari tries to leave his violent past behind and settle down with his love, veterinarian Rukmini, played by Pooja Hegde. However, his peaceful life is shattered when Thilakan disrupts his wedding, demanding the return of stolen goods, forcing Paari back into conflict. After serving time in jail, Paari embarks on a desperate quest to reunite with Rukmini, leading him to a remote island ruled by tyrannical forces.
The project was officially announced in March 2024 under the working title Suriya 44, with the tagline Love, Laughter, War. The official title Retro was revealed in December 2024.
Fans on Twitter have been overwhelmingly positive about 'Retro', calling it a masterpiece and praising Suriya’s brilliant performance. Many viewers appreciated the film’s nostalgic 1990s theme. Suriya’s portrayal of Paarivel Kannan, an orphan raised by a gangster who battles betrayal and fights to reclaim his love, was widely lauded. Fans described his performance as powerful and nuanced. The chemistry between Suriya and Pooja Hegde also received praise.
