The state government on Monday announced the Karnataka State film awards for 2020, and Prajwal Devaraj and Akshatha Pandavapura were named the best actors in the male and female categories, respectively. Prajwal won the award for his performance in Gentleman, for portraying a character suffering from sleeping beauty syndrome. The movie is directed by Jadesh Kumar Hampi. Akshatha won the honour for social thriller Pinki Elli??, directed by Prithvi Konanur. Additionally, Sanchari Vijay posthumously honoured with a Special Jury Award.
Pinki Elli? was adjudged the best film. The movie, based on a real incident that took place in Bengaluru a decade ago, is about a hunt for a missing baby that lays bare the harsh truths of the prevailing social inequalities in big cities. Director Prithvi Konanur said, “It is a well-known fact that there is a lot of pressure on the selection committee every year to give awards to certain films. Pinki Elli’s award credit should go to filmmaker B S Lingadevaru and team, who, did not heed to any kind of pressure. Awards should be transparent, and only then it will hold some value. I hope, in future, this whole “lobby culture” dies, and the system will be strengthened to the point where the jury can work independently. Only then, it can give some kind of hope to budding filmmakers.”
