Years before
Shah Rukh Khan’s iconic Mumbai residence, Mannat, became a cultural landmark, the superstar was once shooed away by its guards. Choreographer
Ahmed Khan recently shared a fascinating anecdote from the late 1990s during the shoot of the song ‘Chand Taare’ for the film Yes Boss, revealing how SRK jokingly expressed his desire to buy the property.
In an interview with Lehren Retro, Ahmed Khan recalled that a portion of the song was filmed outside the bungalow, which was not called Mannat at the time. While shooting a scene where Shah Rukh jumps onto a moving car, the mansion’s guards asked them to leave the premises. In response, the actor, known for his quick wit, quipped, “Shall I buy it? Then we can shoot in peace.” What began as a playful remark eventually became a reality when Shah Rukh Khan purchased the property in 2001 for Rs 13.01 crore.
Over the years, Mannat has transformed into a symbol of SRK’s larger-than-life persona. Fans from across the globe gather outside the mansion, hoping for a glimpse of the actor, especially on special occasions like his birthday. The property, which was once an ordinary sea-facing bungalow, is now valued at Rs 200 crore as of December 2024.
During the launch of
Gauri Khan’s book, My Life in Design, Shah Rukh revealed that their decision to design the house themselves came from financial necessity. After investing heavily in purchasing and renovating the property, the couple couldn’t afford an interior designer. “We did not have too much money. We managed to buy the bungalow, but it was broken and needed rebuilding,” SRK shared.
Currently, Mannat is set to undergo a significant renovation. The Khan family will temporarily relocate to a four-floor apartment in Bandra for the next two years.
