Amol Palekar recalled filming a pivotal scene in Bhumika where director Shyam Benegal felt his performance lacked intensity. Benegal suggested that Palekar slap Smita Patil during the take without informing her first. Initially, Palekar wanted to rehearse it with Smita, but Benegal insisted it be done spontaneously, framing it as a directorial order.

Palekar recalled feeling confused and uneasy about slapping Smita Patil without informing her, as it went against his principles. As the scene progressed, Smita delivered a powerful performance, and at one moment, he instinctively grabbed her hand and slapped her.

Palekar mentioned that Smita Patil was shocked by the unexpected slap, but since Shyam Benegal hadn’t called ‘cut,’ they both continued performing the scene.

Palekar recalled that Smita Patil’s expression showed disbelief, anger, and humiliation, as she hadn’t expected such an action from him. However, both actors remained in character until the director called ‘cut.’ Once the scene ended, he immediately apologized, broke down in tears, and explained his actions. Smita, moved by his sincerity, hugged him and cried as well.

Palekar stated that if faced with a similar situation today, he would refuse to do it. His decision wouldn’t just be due to theater discipline but also because he strongly opposes raising his voice or hand against a woman.

Bhumika featured Naseeruddin Shah and Amrish Puri in key roles. The film was based on Sangtye Aika, the autobiography of Marathi actress Hansa Wadkar.
